Introduction

For those of you that are new to yearly themes, here is a short overview by CGP Grey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVGuFdX5guE. The summary is that instead of setting New Year’s goals, one should set a general theme (either for the year or for individual seasons) and when making decisions, follow the theme. For me, 2022 was a year when, after finishing university, I just wanted to take a break from anything remotely stressful. That meant I indulged in everything from naps to food, or pampering myself with gifts.

In 2023 I want to start setting goals and building habits to better myself in multiple areas of my life:

  1. I want to work more on my personal projects
  2. I want to get more in shape
  3. I want to create more (kind of goes hand in hand with the first point)
  4. I want to start saving money

Working on personal projects

I created this blog as a way to share my project on personal projects. I also hope that by “forcing” myself to write blog posts about what I am working on, I’ll be motivated to work on them so I have what to write about. Besides this blog, I’ve been also thinking about starting a live stream for my projects (TODO: link it here once I’ll start it).

I’d consider 2023 successful if I finish at least two of my projects by the end of it.

Working on my body

I want to get more in shape in 2023 and I’ve decided that the way to achieve this goal is to start exercising a bit. By this I mean that I want to set a couple of really small goals for Q1 (just to be able to get into a routine) and from there to double them every quarter.

Alongside this, I also want to create a better schedule for myself, with blocks of time allocated for different classes of activities instead of just fitting time whenever I can find it.

For fitness, I’ll consider the year a success if I did at least one sport activity (no matter how small) in at least 90% of the days (330 days).

Saving money

For this, my goals are more fuzzy, keeping in mind that I want to build a homelab and also to buy an apartment. My general plan is to start tracking my expenses and to try to keep them under 30% of my after-tax income. This is the least important goal of them for now.

Conclusion and other thoughts

I want to make an year-in-review in December 2023, but until then I hope to come out of the year with a bigger portfolio of projects, some lost weight and hopefully even a homelab. I invite all of you to join me on this journey and to keep me company along the way.
